Card Acceptance Industry
In 2005 plastic cards took over from cash for the first time, with £289 billion in transactions!

Historically Merchants have tended to use the processing system provided by their business bank. There are currently around 10 different providers of Card processing services in the UK.

It isn't widely known that Merchant's can use any provider to process their Card transactions, and there is no need to change Bank accounts. For most businesses the process simply consists of unplugging their old Terminal and plugging in a replacement from their new provider, who will send a summary statement of the transactions on a monthly basis.

Atlantic Business Resources’s partners are specialists in obtaining the most cost effective deals for all our clients and will be available to advise and assist with the easy changeover procedure.

Working out potential savings
See how much you can potentially save through our agreed terms (this example is for a standard retail business with 100% Cardholder Present transactions):

Business with Annual Credit Card Turnover of £600,000 being charged 1.45% by their current provider = Annual fee £8,700

NEW RATE at 1.2% = Annual fee of £7,200 and saving of £1,500 pa
In general terms, the higher your turnover, the more we can save for you.

Are there any costs to switching?
There are usually no costs to switching provider if you are already accepting Card payments. If you are New to Cards then Atlantic Business Resources will find you the lowest possible cost for any Set Up Fee, which can be as high as £500 if you simply go to your own Bank. You will receive monthly summary statements from your new provider, but the credits and narratives on your Bank account will be in the same format as at present. This will ensure you have no reconciliation problems when switching provider.

What are the terminal costs?
There are a wide variety of terminals available, and the monthly rental is normally between £15 and £25 per month. These rental figures tend to be the same across the Banks.

We can arrange the supply, installation and after care service for all types of Terminals on the most competitive terms. Whether you require Fixed Line, Mobile or Portable machines, your business will always be able to accept cards wherever you are. We provide expert advice on the right type of Terminal for your business needs, including integrated EPOS or EFTPOS facilities within your sales order process, or customer facing till system.

How soon does payment reach your bank?
The transactions are normally credited to your bank account after 2-3 days working days and each month you will receive a statement showing the total of credit cards and debit cards processed that month.  The processing fee is taken as a percentage of the card turnover that month for Credit Cards, and as pence per transaction for Debit Cards.

In some sectors, such as travel and Internet payments, the transaction period can be longer, and this will be dependent on the period of risk and business sector.   In some high risk areas the Banks may ask for bonds or guarantees.

If you don’t currently have a facility, Atlantic Business Resources can assist you

Am you guaranteed to get a facility?

All referrals to a bank are subject to acceptance through their Credit and Risk criteria, and Atlantic Business Resources are not able to influence this decision or be responsible for the outcome.

In considering an application, Banks will analyse the type of business, nature of goods and services, delivery method and payment type.

All the Card processing Banks are changed a set fee by MasterCard & Visa on each transaction. This starts at circa 0.85%, but can be as high as 1.75%, and this fee has to be factored into the price they charge their customers.

In a straightforward face to face retail business such as restaurants and shops where clients take the goods away with them is generally classed as lower risk than a business which takes deposits and delivers the goods a few months later.  If the company cannot fulfill the order at time of delivery (due to insolvency etc.) then the Bank will have to refund the cardholder, hence a higher rate will be charged for this type of Merchant and the Risk process more rigorous.

The payment method will also affect the rate, depending whether the transaction is taken face to face, by telephone (Card Holder Not Present), or via the Internet.

For Internet transactions there may also be a 3rd party provider, like Paypal, Worldpay, Secpay (there are dozens), who will provide an interface between the Merchant and the Bank and charge a further processing fee.  This is why it is not uncommon for the total cost to online retailers to be in the region of 3%.
